Division of Infectious Diseases

Goals
  1. To train physicians in the diagnosis and management of various infectious diseases and be familiar with the principles of nosocomial infection control, principles of antibiotic stewardship, and clinical laboratory methodology.
  2. To be acquainted with the diagnosis, treatment, and notification process of National Notifiable Diseases.
  3. To understand the principles of infection control and be able to supervise and execute infection control.
Method The trainees will acquire professional knowledge by reading textbooks and journal articles in seminars, handling inpatient cases and consultations under the supervision of attending physicians, discussing cases in conferences, and participating in the work of the Center of Infectious Control during the two-year training program. The first year focuses on clinical practice, and the second year on research and assisting junior residents.
Contents
  1. Seminars:
    • Textbooks regarding infectious diseases, antimicrobial agents, clinical microbiology, and infectious disease control
    • Journal articles based on inpatient cases and read by junior residents bi-weekly
    • Case conferences discussing challenging consultations posed by trainees.
  2. Clinical practice:
    • Morning rounds with the attending physicians and junior residents
    • Discussing the management of inpatient cases
  3. Infection control:
    • Participating in routine meetings and works of the Center of Infectious Control regarding outbreak investigations and prevention of the spread of nosocomial infections
    • Taking part in the diagnosis, treatment, and notification process of National Notifiable Diseases
  4. Clinical microbiology: understand the process of identification of microorganisms, the procedure of antimicrobial susceptibility tests, and the interpretation of the reports
  5. Antibiotics stewardship and consultations: dealing with consultations under the supervision of attending physicians and assisting in rational antibiotics use
  6. Research and thesis writing: participating in clinical or laboratory-based research related to Infectious Diseases, learning to write a thesis, and publishing at least one original article in the Journal of Microbiology, Infection and Immunology under the guidance of attending physicians
Review All attending physicians in the Division of Infectious Diseases conduct regular evaluations on communication skills, the willingness of learning, work attitude, professional knowledge, clinical judgment, and thesis writing. The director of the Division will communicate with the trainees about the assessment and assist them in making appropriate corrections.
